In Memory of September 11
Re-Posted from 2024 - We Must Never Forget
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:12-13
September 11, 2001 left so many broken hearted, while it also created so many who made the ultimate sacrifice for others. We must never forget those who were lost and those who stepped up.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:9-21
After praying for NYC and the victims of 9/11, FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge died during the debris storm from the collapse of the South Tower.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
September 11 is the day that time stopped. Almost everyone knows where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news.
I, like most Americans, spent the next days glued to my TV, hoping for news of people rescued, wanting to help, watching scenes of good Samaritans helping a fellow citizen in need, grieving for the families broken by this tragedy.
For a few moments, Americans were united as Americans, helping each other, joined together in mourning after this disaster for our nation.
Lord, please continue to comfort the families who have been broken by disaster, whether events like 9/11, natural disaster, fire, October 7, Hurricane Helene, the Texas 4th of July floods, war or everyday calamity. Please bring healing to our nation, and let Americans remember what it was like to be unified in supporting each other, regardless of politics or skin color or sexuality or religion. Please be with our leaders and potential leaders. Please be with my family.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. In your name I pray. Amen.
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:17-18
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal. Isaiah 26:3-4
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23
